I challenge myself to photograph 40 women over 40, and we are halfway there. I have also been sharing a little bit about their life stories. Today I’m featuring Gwen.

Gwen, share a little bit about yourself.

I am 50 as of August, married for 22 years, have three children(29-23), and have two grandchildren. I have owned Obx Roof Monkeys with my husband since 2003. I am starting a new business with my longtime friend Heather. I have lived in Currituck(near the Outer Banks) my entire life. I like reading and watching movies. I love gardening but hate the gardening work. I love to plant beautiful flowers and watch them grow but hate their maintenance. We have three Chihuahuas who I love dearly. I am a presenter with Younique, a direct sales company. This is something I am passionate about. I like the makeup but love the skincare line and its mission. We support sexually abused women and children.

What have been some significant points of change in your life so far? - How did these significant points in your life change you?

My most significant change came after finding out I have type2 diabetes a year ago. In a matter of hours, I had to change my diet from my norm to something that could better manage diabetes and hopefully a way off the meds. While I am still a work in progress, I am closer to that goal. I still need to work on the weight, but diet changes such as giving up the soda and sweets (most of which I cheat on sometimes) have helped.

Have your values changed over time? What do you value now?

No, I don’t think so. My values have always been hard work and loyalty.

If you had a bucket list, what’s your favorite thing you’ve checked off?

Traveling and I have taken several vacations with my family, which is my favorite thing seeing them happy and having fun.

What are your dreams/goals and ambitions for the future?

To continue helping my husband grow the roofing business he started and to grow the company I have started with my friend and business partner.

Are there any myths you would like to bust about being over 40? If so, can you tell us about them?

No, I swear everything said is probably true, especially menopause.

What advice do you have for the younger generation?

Listen to others’ advice some are valuable lessons at the moment, and some are more valuable later in life, but the most important one is to always speak your truth.

We had a blast during her photo session. There may or may not have been some dancing during her photo session. Gwen, I am so thankful to have been chosen to be your photographer. Your grace and beauty are undeniable. Thank you for sharing part of your story with us. Keep speaking your truth. I know you’ve found your voice.

Much love,

Tamara
